Internet Safety for Students
Students now have the world at their fingertips; virtually speaking, of course. The Internet affords today’s students immense opportunities for research and idea sharing that yesterday’s students could only dream of. Thanks to the Internet, today’s students have the opportunity to expand and grow at much higher rates. However, along with this potential for catalyzed growth comes the potential for catalyzed destruction. Unfortunately, there are plenty of malicious people out there who are constantly looking for different ways to steal information in order to rob people of their identity, money or to simply crash their computer. New viruses, spy ware, Trojans, worms, trolling software and much more pop up just about every day. That’s why Internet safety for students is so hugely important.
One of the most basic things that students can do to protect themselves from malicious behavior on the Internet is to be careful with their passwords. For one, students should always be as random as possible with their password to prevent people from simply guessing their password. Their passwords should be changed on a regular basis as well. You should never share your passwords with anyone unless you completely trust them. And students should always be mindful of logging out every time they use a public or shared computer.
And to help protect against all of the worms, viruses, Trojans and other malicious programs out there, students should never use the Internet unless their computer is fully protected by anti-virus programs. And even with an active program, you should still do regular computer scans to check for new viruses and to remove tracking cookies.
